heatstress-warningDogs really enjoy the dog days of summer, but make sure you know how to recognize if your pooch is suffering from heat exhaustion. This happens when they are running about and don’t give their bodies an opportunity to cool down. Heat exhaustion can lead to heat stroke, which can be fatal. Watch his tongue. The first signs of exhaustion are his tongue hanging long and large outside the side of his mouth. His lips will pull back as he attempts to get more air into his lungs. Dogs often circles, looking for a place to lie and their eyes start glazing over. It’s important to get him out of the sun as quickly as possible and apply an ice pack or a Ziploc bag with ice to his tummy area. The idea is to get his temperature down as quickly as possible. And seek veterinary help.
