There’s no question that pets improve our lives in so many ways. At the same time, looking after them is a life long responsibility and often it can be difficult to find somewhere to care for them when for some reason the pet parent is away from home.

This is a typical scenario for men and women in the military. Who will look after their pets when they are deployed?

This is where a wonderful organization called Dogs on Deployment comes in. Actually the name is a misnomer because they take care of cats too!

Dogs On Deployment is a 501(c)(3) national non-profit which provides an online network for service members to search for volunteers who are willing to board their pets during their owner’s service commitments. Dogs on Deployment promotes responsible, life-long pet ownership by military pet owners by advocating for military pet owner rights, providing educational resources and granting financial assistance for military pet owners during times of emergency.

And then there is also the growing concern about people who have served this incredible country well and return from war zones suffering from PTSD an other lifelong afflictions. And that’s where an organization such as Pets for Vets comes in.

Their goal is to help heal the emotional wounds of military veterans by pairing them with a shelter dog that is specially selected to match his or her personality. Professional animal trainers rehabilitate the dogs and teach them good manners to fit into the veteran’s lifestyle. Training may also include desensitization to wheel chairs or crutches as well as recognizing panic or anxiety disorder behaviors.

Needy shelter dogs receive a second chance at life while giving our returning troops a second chance at health and happiness. The bonds of friendship formed between man and animal have the power to ease the suffering of our troops when they return from overseas. It’s truly a win-win.

Purina has teamed up with both military-orientated pet charities Dogs to giveaway $100,000. The $100,000 donation will be split between the two charities. Chosen by public vote, the charity with the most votes will receive $75,000 and the second place charity will receive $25,000. This November has been all about voting. So here’s another opportunity to let your voice be heard by going to www.pureloveforpets.com and voting on the charity of your choice. Its an easy ask as both are worthy charities and once again your vote counts …
