A Special Passover Seder For Dogs

It’s interesting to note that dogs actually play a significant role in the Jewish faith. It is said that during the exodus of Jews from Egypt, not a single dog barked. So, it is tradition to reward dogs with leftover meat during the celebration of Passover.

I remember growing up our four dogs, an Old English Sheepdog, a Cocker Spaniel and two Poodles were very much a part of the Passover Seder celebrations. They even had their own yarmulkes (scull caps) and made quite a picture. They were never fed at the table but knew to expect lamb bones at the end of the meal.

This year, Nature’s Pet Market in South Salem, Oregon is hosting a unique Passover Seder on Sunday, April 13, to recognize canines, spring, and the Passover and Easter holidays. It will be led by Rabbi Avrohom Perlstein of the Chabad Jewish Center in Salem.

The five-minute meal will be symbolic, and include traditions such as a lamb bone and parsley. It also will feature kosher dog food and treats from Evanger’s, certified by the Chicago Rabbinical Council.
